Intro to Digital Marketing

Marketing is a complicated and vast subject.  How hard can it be to get eyes on your products and/or services?  While the invention of the internet has significantly widened the number of people you can reach at a lower cost, it has also become harder to stand out.  Digital marketing, like most things today, is ever-changing. This article will discuss what exactly digital marketing is and why it’s important in today’s world, and in future articles we will discuss implementing an effective digital marketing strategy.

What is Digital Marketing?

This may seem like a straightforward answer, but having a concrete definition to go off of is a good place to start.  Digital marketing is the act of promoting and selling your goods and services online; beit social media, search engines, email, or other intangible means.  Social media channels like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are great and easy ways to keep people up to date. Email subscriptions, which require people to sign up for, feel more personal and can go more in-depth on upcoming offers.

One of the most important rules of marketing is to make the right offer, at the right time, in the right place.  Using digital marketing, it is much easier to fulfill all three of those requirements. Because of this, digital marketing has become more popular, or even replaced, most traditional tactics that are not as effective.

How Does Digital Marketing Work?

Digital marketing is deceptively simple.  On the surface, all that needs to be done is create a post, tweet, or email about your product(s) and or service(s).  However, where, how, and when you create your marketing content is important. Think back to your last big purchase. Did you do any research before buying?  Where did you find your information? What stood out to you about the product or service you ultimately decided on? Most of these answers were probably found on the internet.

It’s important to go to where your customers are.  Does your target demographic spend a lot of time on Facebook?  Instagram? If your selling baby clothes, are there Facebook groups you can post in?

Once you know where your customers are, it will be easier to connect with them by:

  • Keeping them updated with industry news
  • Describing what problems your industry is facing, and why you are the answer
  • Share content about your products and/or services to keep them engaged
  • Use SEO to optimize your content and get found by new customers
  • Paid advertising to drive traffic to your site where potential customers can see your offers
  • Email marketing to follow up with your audience and be sure they continue to find the solutions they need

All of this may seem overwhelming at first, however when you take it one step at a time it can be less intimidating.  And, once you get a good foundation set up and grow your online presence, it becomes much easier to manage.

Benefits of Digital Marketing

Aside from the already stated wider and further reach to customers, digital marketing can easily create awareness both before and after a customer makes a purchase.  You also won’t be doing all the work to get seen. Fans of your product or service can share your posts, which will get it seen by even more potential buyers. It will shorten the buyer’s journey by giving them the right offers at the right time.
